Our Approach
Our approach, based on the Research, Train, and Transform theory of change, is designed to empower persecuted minority groups by building deep relationships and skills in high-risk environments. This methodology allows us to operate securely and confidentially.

-
Research and Advocacy
Research is crucial for understanding the broader context of religious and other minority groups in predominantly Muslim countries. Many Somali Christians and other minority groups face significant challenges, including persecution and social ostracism, which can severely impact their ability to practice their faith openly. These hardships often lead to a lack of community support and resources, making it difficult for them to thrive. Researching the situation of minority and marginalised groups would inform key stakeholders about the unique challenges they face and the support they require. This understanding could lead to more effective policies and initiatives aimed at promoting their rights and well-being within broader Somali societal contexts.
Furthermore, the SM aims to promote freedom of religion or belief in the country by raising awareness about the importance of tolerance and understanding among different faiths. Through educational initiatives and training, we seek to create a dialogue that fosters respect for diverse beliefs and encourages peaceful coexistence. To contribute to a more inclusive and peaceful community, our goal is to foster an environment where all individuals can freely express their religion and beliefs.
-
Train and Capacity Building
We provide capacity-building and training opportunities for Somali Christians and other minority groups to enhance their skills and deepen their understanding of their faith. With formally trained Somali theologians, pastors, and other professionals, the Somali Mission network delivers capacity-building initiatives that foster healthy church growth among Somalis. Our training programs include discipleship, leadership, and Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB). Our goal is to equip the Somali believers to be prepared for persecution and engage courageously and wisely by claiming their rights in contexts of challenge and opposition. By igniting a movement through research, training, and transformation, we aim to empower Somali Christians to assume leadership roles, strengthen their communities, and become effective witnesses of hope and reconciliation.
-
Transform
The final phase is transformation. We measure our success not just by the number of people trained, but by the tangible, lasting change we see in their lives and communities. The skills and knowledge gained in the training phase are put into action. For example, a person trained in business management might start a small, discreet business that provides employment for other believers. Or a leader trained in trauma healing might establish a small, confidential support group. The aim is to empower these communities to create positive change for themselves, fostering resilience and building a supportive environment that enables them to overcome persecution and thrive.
